Gap Filling of Pronouns

Pronouns : A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun to avoid its repetition.

A)  Personal Pronouns : Used for persons. Examples : I, We, you, he, she, they, me, our, etc.

  • __________ need to stop lying to me.  Answer : You need to stop lying to me.
  • ___________  is very kind and generous . Answer :  She is very kind and generous
  • B)  Reflexive or Emphatic Pronouns : - Used as object of the verb. The action of the subject turns back on the subject itself. Example: formed by adding 'self' to my, your, him, her, it (myself, herself, itself) and 'selves' to our, your, them (plural) as ourselves, yourselves, themselves

  • Raju did it ____________ .  Answer  :  Raju did it himself.
  • The boys polished their shoes _____________ .  Answer : The boys polished their shoes themselves
  • C ) Demonstrative Pronouns : Used to point out the things to which they refer. Example : this, these point to nearby things, that, those point to objects at a distance.

  • _________ looks like the car I used to drive.   Answer :  That looks like the car I used to drive.
  • ___________  are the candies I bought.  Answer :  These are the candies I bought.
  • D ) Interrogative Pronouns : Used for asking questions. Example : who, whom, (used for persons); which (used for things); what (also used for things)

  • _______  do you want for your birthday?  Answer  :  What do you want for your birthday?
  • _____________  shirt do you think looks better on me?   Answer :  Which shirt do you think looks better on me?
  • E )  Distributive Pronouns : Refer to persons or things one at a time. Examples : each, every, either, neither, each rightarrow  means every one of two or more taken separately, either rightarrow one of the two, neither rightarrow none of the two, every  rightarrow used with singular class nouns.

  • __________  boy was given a prize.  Answer :  Each boy was given a prize.
  • _________  road leads to the railway station.   Answer :  Either road leads to the railway station.
